Robert Mertens' "day job" for 35 years was designing and giving creative direction for home products (mostly decorative printed fabrics, but many other decorative home products as well). At night and over weekends Mertens pursued his personal art, working in the media of drawing, painting, and photography. Mertens states, "Since I was a small child I have always been fascinated with the beauty of colors and the grace of natural objects. I especially like surfaces that play with light, such as flowers, feathers, water, and glass. Sparkling things and reflections speak to me of the flickering life of the spirit."
